Hello Everyone, Right now my shared winter residency at CounterPULSE is in full swing and my performers & I are feeling really good about where we are in the process of creating this piece.  We've been working & playing hard in the studio making relevant material and out on the streets & beach shooting video footage.  As we approach our final weeks of editing and shaping what we have into a compelling, succinct piece I am also turning my attention

Summer 2012 Artists in Residence announced

2012-02-21T17:20:33-08:00By |Categories: Artists in Residence, CounterPULSE|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , |

It is with great pleasure that I announce CounterPULSE's newest Artist in Residence, Xandra Ibarra (AKA La Chica Boom) and Seth Eisen! Xandra's subtle yet biting use of satire destabilizes images of authenticity. Seth's unique brand of dazzling storytelling reconnects us with lost queer wisdom. Together these works will make you question who you are and where you came from, all the while dazzling you with costumes, drag, burlesque and puppetry. You're sure to leave out the in-door and not

Reflections

The beauty of the artists I’m working with never ceases to amaze me. When I witness them, I witness the uniqueness of each person’s spirit, each person’s love and passion for her or his art, each person’s gift of giving deeply to the birth of this piece. This creative endeavor is bringing to life the histories stored within our bodies. We convey through movement, martial arts, Chinese lion dance, music, text, and video the depth of what cannot be translated

The Magic

2016-03-18T21:47:12-07:00By |Categories: Artists in Residence, CounterPULSE, Lenora Lee|Tags: , , , , , , |

There is an unmistakable magic that occurs when a group of 16 artists fill a room and reveal their craft.  4 people transform into 2 majestic lions… the spirits and essence of the tradition.  It’s hard to express the feeling of watching what is in your mind’s eye manifest in front of you, to the glory of your initial vision.  Presence, compassion, love, and wisdom.  You hear it.  You feel it.  You know what you are a part of is

Entering the Temple of Tech Week

I've come to love tech week--the week leading up to a performance run in which we have tech (technical) rehearsals, dress rehearsals and last minute scramblings to finish. I notice that during this time I am highly energized with a mix of anxiety, anticipation and joy. And I notice that the main thing that keeps me grounded is spending as much time as possible at the theater. I like to get to the place we're performing hours before each event,

Coming Home

2016-03-18T22:11:50-07:00By |Categories: Artists in Residence, CounterPULSE, Kegan Marling|Tags: , , , , , |

I've often thought about what it means to come home to someone. When you come home to someone, there's comfort and consistency. A dog's tail wagging, rich smells from the kitchen and maybe a kid slamming the screen door to escape outside into the air and wilderness and unknown. But coming home feels like too many slices of other peoples dreams. I get lost in them. They're flip books from another era and a different group of people sitting around
