Hello from FACT/SF!

Hello! I could not be more thrilled to begin developing Pretonically Oriented v.3 at CounterPULSE via the Artist Residency Commissioning Program. The last few rounds of ARC have produced some truly remarkable works – Kegan Marling and Dandelion Dancetheater most recently, and Jesse Hewit and Laura Arrington last August. So great. Challenging, beautiful, nuance-filled works have become de rigueur for ARC, and I’m psyched to be included in this program and this effort alongside the wonderful Lenora Lee. So. Rad.

This past Sunday was our final performance of, “Our Daily Bread” at CounterPULSE. After a two week run which included 8 sold out performances and one show for students from Mission High School, I am still feeling the overwhelm of such a wonderful, ass kicking, joyous and painful experience that was the making and performing of this work. Reflections on the opening weekend of "Our Daily Bread" This past Thursday, Our Daily Bread opened to very supportive and enthusiastic audiences. I've come to love tech week--the week leading up to a performance run in which we have tech (technical) rehearsals, dress rehearsals and last minute scramblings to finish. I notice that during this time I am highly energized with a mix of anxiety, anticipation and joy. For many years on my birthday, my mother would make her seafood gumbo. It was one of the few times I would ask her to make this dish and I always liked to share this experience with family and friends because my mother’s gumbo is an experience. It’s been almost 2 weeks since I left Senegal..every day in Senegal I ate 3 meals a day. Everyday, 3 times a day, we stopped everything else so we could eat ( I say we because I never ate alone there).
