The Pulse in Paris: Nantes

2010-04-02T10:39:02-07:00By |Categories: CounterPULSE|

Well, we have finally landed back in Paris after our 7 day trip out on the road and what a whirlwind experience it has been.  Things went so smoothly through Angers that I should have known we'd hit a snag somewhere along the line and that snag turned out to be Nantes.  The crew arrived on Wednesday night (the cast would follow the next day in time for rehearsal) and we were knackered.  Nantes always seems to take a significant

The Lovely Lily

Last week, I was lucky enough to attend "Beyond the Veil" at CounterPULSE. The evening, a mix of music, performance and visuals was an experience I have been needing to have. Lily Taylor took the stage and presented the audience a rare opportunity to see a music artist pair her work with performance artists inspired by music. Seated at her keyboard by her drum and looping mechanisms, her sultry, atmospheric and fluid vocals interacted with a variety of impressive visual

Post-BHOPAL – Thank you!

Dear Friends, Thank you for attending our staged-reading of Bhopal by Rahul Varma at CounterPULSE on Friday, March 26th! I directed Bhopal to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Bhopal Tragedy and to honor Habib Tanvir, a legendary director from India, who translated the play into Hindi as Zahreeli Hawa (Poisonous Wind). Bhopal was staged minimally.  6 actors sat on chairs on either side of the stage. We had a wonderful dancer, vocalist and tabla player, seated on a rug

Writing that title makes me remember my self-scripting teacher in undergrad, Rosemary Quinn, and how she would so clearly and ritualistically STATE the date at the opening and closing of each of our sessions. It has stuck with me. And its funny, I use it for all sorts of things. When I'm having a sad or rough patch in my day (or week or year for that matter), I tend to find some sky to look up at, and I

Before getting into much let me say I am beyond humbled and thrilled and terrified and ecstatic about this residency. First, the staff at Counterpulse are amazing. This feeling of being supported is both delightful and totally foreign, but it's a feeling i could get used to. so first, and for real THANK YOU to all the CP folks. Second, I can't believe Joe Goode will be mentoring this project. I dont even have words for this... more on that

Do you all remember that Baz Luhrman spoken word tone poem from the late 90's "Everybody's Free to Wear Sunscreen?"  It starts "Ladies and Gentlemen of the class of '97, Wear sunscreenIf I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it."  Well my version, if I wrote it this week would read "Travellers and adventurer's in the year of 2010, bring your passport.  If I could offer you only one tip for traveling (especially on

of a faun…. the beginning inspiration for the visual design of “Hot Wings”

the beginning... my favorite part everything seems possible and the threads of connection are just barely starting to show themselves. At the beginning, I spend a lot of time drawing, painting, imagining, and (i wish less often) buying/collecting objects. the visual component of the work is hugely crucial for me. here are some preliminary paintings i've done for the set inspiration for Hot Wings and some amazing finds from Scrap (a decoy deer and waves of tiny birds) how will these

The Pulse in Paris: Le Fin

Well another year and another tour.  We closed the show in Paris last night and as always it was pretty amazing.  There is nothing quite like stumbling out of a theater near midnight, delirious from a combination of adrenaline, wine and exhaustion and being cast in the sparkling lights of the Eiffel Tower.  It is one of the smoothest experiences we have had at the Salle Adyar, the theater in which we perform in Paris.  It poses plenty of challenges

Our May Day Festival got featured on the SF Guardian's Pixel Vision blog today. Caitlin Donohue gave a great write up explaining the event and sharing a bit behind why we invited certain performers. Read the post... She highlights it, but now you're wondering why would we ever invite this man for our Saturday night Happening? My answer is why wouldn't we?! More about May Day, the full line-up and tickets! Only 2 days and counting!
