The beauty of the artists I’m working with never ceases to amaze me. When I witness them, I witness the uniqueness of each person’s spirit, each person’s love and passion for her or his art, each person’s gift of giving deeply to the birth of this piece. This creative endeavor is bringing to life the histories stored within our bodies. We convey through movement, martial arts, Chinese lion dance, music, text, and video the depth of what cannot be translated

Looking back to move forward (part of FACT/SF’s Tasty Tuesdays)

You might know by now that FACT/SF is interested in many things...systems and people and movements and implications and meta-theatrical concerns and deep emotive expressions.  As we do our best to innovate and push push push forward - both relative to our own work and also the larger field of dance working/making, we always find it helpful to reflect on the greats that innovated long ago, and who continue to inspire us today.  Here's one of Beethoven's masterpieces.  It's incredible,

Reaching OUT… Intern Update

Howdy CounterPULSE Peeps, I'm Tessa, the outreach intern. I had an urge to blog, which has never really happened to me before,  so I figured I would talk about my time at CounterPULSE so far. Well...where to begin? Basically, I love working here. Er'body is really nice and I'm learning a ton. But enough about me — I want to talk about the Summer Specials, not just because it's my job, but because they are really great! Last night I

WORK MORE! is hard work

2011-07-05T21:23:16-07:00By |Categories: CounterPULSE|

Oh my! We had our first CounterPULSE rehearsal on Saturday. It was quite warm outside, and the studio quickly heated up as we ran our opening dance routine over and over. Then our photographer collaborators showed up and hung up the photoshow in the gallery, it looks so gorgeous and should be completed by tomorrow night.   Please check out our Kickstarter and the awesome video Loren Robertson made for us! http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/865485325/work-more-wants-to-tour

PERSEPOLIS, TEXAS: Costuming and General Readiness

2011-07-02T14:01:43-07:00By |Categories: CounterPULSE|

Whoa folks. I know it's close when I'm at Foot Worship getting my shoes for the show, around the corner from Rosalie's where I ordered a fantastic wig. Sara, my main collaborator, director, dramaturg (and at this point, my life coach- without her I think this queen would be in an anxiety-ridden stupor at this phase) is a little worried about the height of these kicks. We'll see. I'm not sure if broken ankles are worth it in the name

Erika Tsimbrovsky Interview

2011-06-29T16:46:20-07:00By |Categories: CounterPULSE, Summer Special 2011|

Howdy CounterPULSERS, I'm Tessa Fleming, the summer outreach intern. I've been doing interviews of our Summer Special artists and here is the first one- by Erika Tsimbrovsky of Avy K Productions. Her show, Rustling Silk, runs AUG 26th and 27th at 8 pm both nights. Below is the interview. She has some pretty cool insight, I definitely recommend giving it a read. Tessa Fleming: Describe your show in three words. Erika Tsimbrovsky: an exploration of roots in rootlessness TF: What's

FACT/SF Work in Progress Showing (part of FACT/SF’s Thirsty Thursdays)

Often artists, including myself, find themselves pitching a project before they've really gotten dirty with it, before they really know what the project really IS.  Nearly a month into rehearsals now, we're learning so many new things.  The Work in Progress Showing last week featured some healthy discourse that elicited new ideas and fantastic feedback.  Here's a small clip from our showing and what I think about what we're doing.  As we continue to work, we'll no doubt unearth even more
