You might know by now that FACT/SF is interested in many things...systems and people and movements and implications and meta-theatrical concerns and deep emotive expressions. As we do our best to innovate and push push push forward - both relative to our own work and also the larger field of dance working/making, we always find it helpful to reflect on the greats that innovated long ago, and who continue to inspire us today. Here's one of Beethoven's masterpieces. It's incredible,
In an effort to share everything I possibly can about what we're doing, I made a short explanatory video - it's rad and you should check it out! ~Charles Slender Artistic Director, FACT/SF http://youtu.be/pH63NTPSgk4
On a rainy Tuesday morning, FACT/SF's Artistic Director Charles Slender tries to figure out what, really, this project is. We're getting closer.
Often artists, including myself, find themselves pitching a project before they've really gotten dirty with it, before they really know what the project really IS. Nearly a month into rehearsals now, we're learning so many new things. The Work in Progress Showing last week featured some healthy discourse that elicited new ideas and fantastic feedback. Here's a small clip from our showing and what I think about what we're doing. As we continue to work, we'll no doubt unearth even more
Hey y'all, FACT/SF is back this week with another Tasty Tuesdays posting. We share who we're inspired by...artists and thinkers who we think have made, or are making, significant contributions. This week it's the choreographer, dancer, and, by some accounts, true founder of modern dance - which of course laid the foundation for contemporary dance - Vaslav Nijinsky. Sometimes our short-term memories prevent us from seeing the very, very long history of performance innovation - so as we continue to
I think with Satie's work, especially with this piece, a simple and methodical space is opened that allows the listener to submerge themselves in thought, reflection, and image-building. The work has an emotional quality...but I think it's generated by the listener, and doesn't necessary lie within the score itself. There's something about this that reminds me of one of FACT/SF's goals with Pretonically Oriented...to try to methodically create, organize, and re-configure so that the viewer can watch what unfolds, while
Here are the first four free-writes, on the shared formative theme of 'first bedroom', from FACT/SF's performers. They each chose eight words or phrases that were resonant to them for whatever reason. These texts, and others like them, form the basic source material for the entire POv Project! swirling upwards, strange, swaying, winds, round, antique, telephone, windowsill brass hook, misty ghost, mom, crazy, next first room, stupid shelves, lego kingdoms, zebra childhood, stepping stone, lava, 80s porn, Laura, doctor, invitation flat cities, at ease, at the top of a hill in a hilly town, first bedroom, all around, my house, in part, even when I am sleeping
As we're just getting to know each other, dear CounterPULSE community, I'll do my best to share with you what I'm thinking about, how I work, and what I'm creating throughout FACT/SF's residency. It occurs to me that sometimes sharing inspirations is the most effective way of communicating interests...so we've launched "Tasty Tuesdays" on our Facebook page. Each week we post a video of a choreographer, thinker, visual artist, writer, etc., who we think is doing important work, who we
Hello! I could not be more thrilled to begin developing Pretonically Oriented v.3 at CounterPULSE via the Artist Residency Commissioning Program. The last few rounds of ARC have produced some truly remarkable works – Kegan Marling and Dandelion Dancetheater most recently, and Jesse Hewit and Laura Arrington last August. So great. Challenging, beautiful, nuance-filled works have become de rigueur for ARC, and I’m psyched to be included in this program and this effort alongside the wonderful Lenora Lee. So. Rad.
There is an unmistakable magic that occurs when a group of 16 artists fill a room and reveal their craft. 4 people transform into 2 majestic lions… the spirits and essence of the tradition. It’s hard to express the feeling of watching what is in your mind’s eye manifest in front of you, to the glory of your initial vision. Presence, compassion, love, and wisdom. You hear it. You feel it. You know what you are a part of is
This past Sunday was our final performance of, “Our Daily Bread” at CounterPULSE. After a two week run which included 8 sold out performances and one show for students from Mission High School, I am still feeling the overwhelm of such a wonderful, ass kicking, joyous and painful experience that was the making and performing of this work. It has been a journey that felt so right to complete it where it all began-at CounterPULSE. The process was magical in
