As part of the pilot CounterPulse Performance and Technology Combustible — a residency model for artists collaborating with creative technologists— we hosted two work-in-progress labs last week for participating artists: Capacitor with collaborator Zach Howard, and Dohee Lee with collaborator Donald Swearingen. Dohee Lee and Donald Swearingen were first to show their work. Kindred Mirror- Surprising Spirit–On Sam Steward and Homo File

When I saw my college art instructor Seth Eisen at the Homo File Salon, his greeting was warm and sincere in his thanks for my support. Nevertheless his genuine warmth couldn't hide some genuine curiosity as to my presence. He asked me to come up with a few words as to what Sam Steward's significance was to me as a straight- identified male, and how I saw Sam as bridging our cultures. This is the most concise answer I can

ImShift

ImShift explores the shifting identity of "living in the in-between" as Latin American living in the diaspora. Through the ritualistic practice of self-affirmation, one can challenge systemic barriers and create art that transcends borders. The expiration of this piece is my lived reality and the work of performance scholar Diana Taylor. This piece is also about the shifting pressures and negotiations in collaboration. The music, the video and the choreography were developed separate. Its in the later part of the

If I had the time it would be better to keep me on track if I would blog every day during this process... but these days are full and there is much to say about what has taken place over the last month so forgive me if this blog is more like a sampler plate, with only a small taste of many ideas... Since the last blog there have been several food parties that have gone down. We had a

DA: You mention that indifference is based on Albert Camus' The Stranger. How did you decide to use this novel as inspiration for your performance?  LTCo: As a reflection on the absurdity of free will, indifference questions the troubling impenitence experienced by Camus' protagonist, Meursault. What if free will, which we hold so dear as a marker of individual freedom, actually engenders a lack of empathy for those around us? Does our experience of the world then simply become a series of self-affirming reactions to

The beauty of the artists I’m working with never ceases to amaze me. When I witness them, I witness the uniqueness of each person’s spirit, each person’s love and passion for her or his art, each person’s gift of giving deeply to the birth of this piece. This creative endeavor is bringing to life the histories stored within our bodies. We convey through movement, martial arts, Chinese lion dance, music, text, and video the depth of what cannot be translated

It is thick, messy, full of crabs legs, shrimps, oysters and okra. We used to spread newspaper on the table, wear bibs and used nut crackers to crack the crab, the sound of

I’m cooking as fast as I can! A week and a half ago, I found myself cooking for one food party after another and no sooner than I finish washing my trusty pot that I cook my stews in does Julie Phelps and Keith Hennessey call me and ask me if I can come cook for 150 people at the amazing marathon performance they produce at Dance Mission called, Too Much! What do I say? Hell yeah! I had a
