FACT/SF Collaborator Liane Burns, on the JuMP Program

(Photo by Devlin Shand) As we gear up for our performances this weekend, I am able to reflect on how amazing the JuMP Program truly is. Having participated as a dancer for the first two seasons, and as both dancer and co-choreographer in the third, I feel I can now speak to how important JuMP is for our Bay Area dance community. There are a surprising amount of opportunities in the region for new choreographers to create and present work

(Photo by Devlin Shand) Staring straight into the face of our show week for JuMP 2016, I’m happy to take a moment to organize my thoughts, ground myself, and reflect on the unique experience of being the 2016 JuMP Choreographer. FACT/SF’s JuMP Program has opened up so many doors for me. It has allowed me to better hone my artistic voice and my choreographic skills, and welcomed me into a new community of dancers and creators who similarly held

Slender-White on Dancing at Home and Abroad

2016-08-23T21:16:45-07:00By |Categories: FACT/SF|

(Photo by Gregory Lorenzutti) As you all well know by now, community lies at the heart of all we do at FACT/SF. Together, our artists and advocates, fans and friends, make our work and make our work possible. And, though the Bay Area is home, our impact reaches far beyond our region - across the state, the country, North America, and many diverse regions around the world. The FACT/SF perspective is simultaneously local and global, and our 2016 programming highlights

Looking back to move forward (part of FACT/SF’s Tasty Tuesdays)

You might know by now that FACT/SF is interested in many things...systems and people and movements and implications and meta-theatrical concerns and deep emotive expressions.  As we do our best to innovate and push push push forward - both relative to our own work and also the larger field of dance working/making, we always find it helpful to reflect on the greats that innovated long ago, and who continue to inspire us today.  Here's one of Beethoven's masterpieces.  It's incredible,

Often artists, including myself, find themselves pitching a project before they've really gotten dirty with it, before they really know what the project really IS.  Nearly a month into rehearsals now, we're learning so many new things.  The Work in Progress Showing last week featured some healthy discourse that elicited new ideas and fantastic feedback.  Here's a small clip from our showing and what I think about what we're doing.  As we continue to work, we'll no doubt unearth even more

Vaslav Nijinsky (part of FACT/SF’s Tasty Tuesdays)

2016-03-18T22:07:43-07:00By |Categories: Artists in Residence, CounterPULSE, FACT/SF|

Hey y'all, FACT/SF is back this week with another Tasty Tuesdays posting.  We share who we're inspired by...artists and thinkers who we think have made, or are making, significant contributions.  This week it's  the choreographer, dancer, and, by some accounts, true founder of modern dance - which of course laid the foundation for contemporary dance - Vaslav Nijinsky.  Sometimes our short-term memories prevent us from seeing the very, very long history of performance innovation - so as we continue to

Erik Satie (part of FACT/SF’s Tasty Tuesdays)
