France’s Next Top Set Designer Pt. 1

2011-02-09T03:33:23-08:00By |Categories: CounterPULSE|

Well, here I am back on the other side of the world working that whole theater thang!  That's right your trusty Theater Manager and resident Lighting Designer has once again flown to France, this year the first of 2 trips, to conduct workshops with design students who will hopefully build part of our set, saving us the cost of shipping it to France.  Though I'm only here for 10 days and only 2 days in so far, it has been

Don't worry this is just the primer coat, check back in a few days to see the sleek new paint job on CounterPULSE and look for more upgrades in the next week when we add a sign and external lighting! Check out more of these photos by our great tech intern Sarah Fiske!

The Pulse in Paris: Le Fin

2010-04-16T05:25:33-07:00By |Categories: CounterPULSE|

Well another year and another tour.  We closed the show in Paris last night and as always it was pretty amazing.  There is nothing quite like stumbling out of a theater near midnight, delirious from a combination of adrenaline, wine and exhaustion and being cast in the sparkling lights of the Eiffel Tower.  It is one of the smoothest experiences we have had at the Salle Adyar, the theater in which we perform in Paris.  It poses plenty of challenges

The Pulse in Paris: Nefarious Nancy

Do you all remember that Baz Luhrman spoken word tone poem from the late 90's "Everybody's Free to Wear Sunscreen?"  It starts "Ladies and Gentlemen of the class of '97, Wear sunscreenIf I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it."  Well my version, if I wrote it this week would read "Travellers and adventurer's in the year of 2010, bring your passport.  If I could offer you only one tip for traveling (especially on

The Pulse in Paris: Nantes

2010-04-02T10:39:02-07:00By |Categories: CounterPULSE|

Well, we have finally landed back in Paris after our 7 day trip out on the road and what a whirlwind experience it has been.  Things went so smoothly through Angers that I should have known we'd hit a snag somewhere along the line and that snag turned out to be Nantes.  The crew arrived on Wednesday night (the cast would follow the next day in time for rehearsal) and we were knackered.  Nantes always seems to take a significant

The Pulse in Paris: Adventures in Angers

So, we are finally off and running, making that big trek from the Paris apartment up the road to Gare Montparnasse.  We all made it safe and sound with the help of our wonderful friend Muriel, who lent her car for transporting all the show bags which made it so much easier.  And we got it all on and off the train with reasonable ease.  We always have to be at the train very early the first time because we

The Pulse from Paris Part Deux

So we are just about to pack everything up once again and make the trek up to Montparnasse train station to hit the road for the first time.  We are headed to Angers, one of my favorite cities and just the perfect place to kick off our tour.  But we do have to get there first.  Fortunately, we have help from our friend Muriel in Paris who is graciously offering to drive our bags (and probably our stage manager) to

The Pulse in Paris Pt. 1

2010-03-25T09:44:11-07:00By |Categories: CounterPULSE|

Well, as many of you may already know I have taken leave of my Theater Manager duties (much thanks to Del and Claire for holding down the fort while I'm away) for a month while I am on tour in France with Word For Word Performing Arts production of Two On A Party by Tennessee Williams.  This is my fourth year on the tour and I am finally feeling comfortable and confident with the process and with working in a

Do You Have Those in Black?

2009-08-21T19:31:38-07:00By |Categories: CounterPULSE, Images|Tags: , , |

Ok so we aren't quite finished but we are nearly there.  We had to use the white because in the entire Bay Area it is apparently the only color in which they make Fire Retardant paint.  Patrick Simms and I slapped the first coat of black on before we left yesterday and I think they are going to look great.  We are looking for a big push over the weekend to bring this puppy home, so come lend a hand

I guess Scott Wells & Dancers really do know what men want….

2009-05-28T14:59:05-07:00By |Categories: CounterPULSE|Tags: |

Wow!  I can honestly say I have never been so turned on by a group of men before.  I don't mean this in any strictly sexual way, after all I tend to label myself as a straight male, but the essence of these pieces delves so much deeper than the visceral.  It was poetic to see such a strong and raw group of men expose their vulnerabilities so willingly and so passionately.  Scott did an exquisite job of treading the
