Ja’Moon Jones works through dance and multidisciplinary collaboration to build immersive worlds that examine spiritual displacement and diasporic identity. As a child of the African diaspora, he inherits fragmented and obscured histories, and his artistic pr actice functions as a ritual of recall. His work seeks to recover and preserve histories, cultural memory, and ways of knowing erased or excluded from dominant understandings of Black American life. Centering radical embodiment, oral storytelling, and immersive scenic design, Ja’Moon translates arcane wisdom cultivated through his engagement with stewards of African and diasporic ancestral traditions.
MudMothers: Origins is an immersive, evening-length dance theater work that draws from African and Afro-diasporic ceremonial traditions as the guiding force of life’s initiations—birth, rupture, loss, awakening, and renewal. Through embodied ritual, movement, and song the work functions as both invocation and living archive.
