Join us for a double-billed Block Fest party!
Get your paint on with Dawn Leigh’s Black Hawk Traveling Mural Project and join the fun of finishing the Traveling Murals that will travel around San Francisco. Connect with the community through art making, and admire the murals that will be celebrated throughout the city. This project draws from Tenderloin’s history to celebrate the legendary Black Hawk Night Club, a jazz venue that was one of the only places where mixed race audiences could sit together, countering the nationwide racial segregation of the time.
Meanwhile, stop by to create your own melodies Rick Darnell’s Music Box Orchestra! Stop by to create your own melodies with hand cranked music boxes. We will record and playback our tunes by punching holes in paper strips, and play them in the music box- just like an old time player piano. Have fun creating small “orchestra” compositions and unique music! At the end, we will document our lovely projects share them with friends and family on social media.
Be sure to be there at 4:30 for Ms. Rita Whittaker’s (Tenderloin chanteuse) performance of “I will Survive!”
