Dancers’ Group and CounterPULSE present 2nd Sundays, an open discourse project in which artists share works in progress and participate in a constructive conversation with audience members and fellow artists. This is an exciting opportunity to advance the open exchange of ideas and participate in the creative process of performing artists. This month’s salon includes work from:

Katharine Hawthorne
“Lumen,” is a duet for two women and a moving light source, in which one of the performers wears a small light.  This work examines how light creates shared space between performers as well as the power of light to reveal or obscure what we perceive.

Erin Malley
“Alsomitra,” a narrative dance theater work, follows three characters through a series of job interviews.  Interview questions become off-base, and in reaction the characters grow increasingly unhinged, offering ridiculous things in order to get the job.

Ruth Botchan Dance Company
The work I plan to present was initially inspired by a show of the works of Wassily Kandinsky at the Guggenhem Museum in New York City. While the piece is in some ways inspired by Kandinsky’s ever-moving paintings, it is also a tribute to my teacher Erick Hawkins– an exploration of how abstract themes can be presented in the realm of dance, where feelings can be expressed through movement and space in addition to lines and color. The piece as it is taking form, is an expression of the pleasure and delight of moving, and ultimately, of existence.
