Location: 80 Turk Street, San Francisco
Exploding Psycho Diagnostik confronts the gaze with the whole body whilst explicitly acknowledging the psycho-politcal power structures that are embedded in the act of gazing. Phoebe Osborne facilitates a consensual safe(r) exploration of ways of dismantling the power play of the gaze altogether or at least challenging it via abstraction. The one-day workshop will involve nudity and a collective project of creating large inkblot images with paint and the body which will be utilized in an interactive performance during the evening events. Playing with the Rorschach test as a way of dealing with both abstraction and with psycho-political power systems, we will investigate how social constructs of mental illness and craziness are ways of negating (the power or contribution or strength of) marginalized identities.
This event is presented as part of THIS IS WHAT I WANT, an annual performance festival about desire in its fifth year. A film night, workshops, a symposium, discussions, a solo and an interactive immersive performance make up the festival this year, continuing our ongoing conversation about desire as a socio/political/cultural construct.
