Classes and WorkshopsBeginning–Intermediate Contact ImprovisationTuesdays, 6:30-8pm $12 drop-in, or $15 and stay for the JamIdeal for discovering contact improvisation, brushing up skills, or getting a good warm-up. June classes are taught by Rajendra Serber How do we move from reenacting tricks to a physical dialog? This class will focus on the Improvisation aspect of Contact Improvisation. We will warm up with basic contact improvisation skills and explore techniques for learning, and playing with, the unique qualities of a partner's physicality. We will develop our awareness of what our contact communicates, and practice listening skills to respond to what is being offered. Then we will use that as a guide to make the dance a playful dialog with our partner. The workshop is open to all levels. I've taught Contact Improv in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Norway and Australia. I can't really remember a time when contact improvisation wasn't part of my life. I'm the same age as Contact Improv. I think it must have come from my father, who was a national wrestling champion in Argentina. Before i could even walk I was being rolled and flung around by him. I grew up wrestling as a playful and loving practice. It wasn't until I got to collage that I found there was a name for it. Since that time. I've studied a variety of physical forms: Cuningham Technique, Release Technique, Butoh, Alexander Technique, Astanga Yoga, and Tai Chi with teachers Anna Halprin, Scott Wells, Sara Shelton Mann, Kathleen Hermsdoff, Simone Forte, Oguri, Akira Kasi, Viola Farber, Daniel Lepkoff, and Others. Look at RJNDR.NET for more info. July classes are taught by Ralf Jaroschinski In the beginning of the class, we’ll focus on our center and awareness. We will then investigate the texture of our connection with our partner(s) through listening to their and again our actions and reactions in the ongoing dance. We'll also practice some specific contact improvisation skills and techniques. With these we’ll not only be experiencing the freedom of space and the excitement of momentum in the dynamic dance, but also the heightened support we get from dancing in communication with our center and other persons’ centers as well.
It's a good class for discovering some of the diverse aspects of contact improvisation, for brushing up on your skills or also for getting a good warm-up before the jam! Ralf Jaroschinski was born in Southern Germany and grew up in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He received classical and modern dance training in Germany and then studied contemporary dance techniques in New York City. That’s where he discovered contact improvisation about fourteen years ago – mainly in Daniel Lepkoff’s and Alito Alessi’s classes among others. He currently works as a dance teacher and choreographer mainly in Europe and the Americas. He enjoys using contact improvisation in his creations and is focusing on teaching it since about eight years.
