Strategic Plan 2012-2015

Welcome to our strategic plan — the boldest and most ambitious document that CounterPulse has ever created.

During the last year, we’ve examined our own assumptions about why we do the work we do, we’ve asked you — our communities — to tell us what you value, and we have pushed ourselves to articulate our deeply-held hopes and dreams for the future of this organization. This is heady work, but it has been deeply grounded in the needs of our community and in our financial reality. It is also grounded in our deep and abiding belief in artists, and in the importance of supporting artistic freedom. While we continue this commitment, we also acknowledge that our work will be most powerful if we devote equal energy to engaging the multiple communities that will interact with this art, becoming a leader in bringing artists and audiences together in new ways.

We have made this plan in a time of great change, of economic uncertainty and upheaval in our neighborhood, our state, and our field. So it is appropriate that our Theory of Change is the heart and soul of this strategic plan. In it we articulate our vision for the world we want to live in. We aren’t just in this to make great art — although that’s what we do in our theater every day — we’re in it to change our world. We know that live performance brings people together in a way that few other experiences can. It challenges our preconceptions and builds alliances in surprising and powerful ways. In this strategic plan, we make bold claims about the power of art, and we back them up with a commitment to work hard, to remain flexible, to adhere to our core values, and to measure our results.

This work would not have been possible without the dedication and investment of our generous board of directors, the visionary leadership of our talented staff (who are also artists in the field), the thoughtful contributions of the many colleagues who informed this process, and the skilled facilitation and ‘thought partnership’ of our team at CompassPoint. Each word in our Theory of Change is the result of hours of intelligent and passionate dialogue, and the sum total is a testament to the power unleashed when a group of smart and dedicated people share a common purpose.

We know that this plan is only as strong as the community that rallies behind it, and that’s why we’ve made it as dynamic, exciting, and accessible as possible. Whether you are an audience member, artist, funder or community partner, we hope that this plan excites you and motivates you to join us. Together, we can build a dynamic movement of risk-taking art that shatters assumptions and builds community.
