EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

CounterPulse seeks an Executive Director who is passionate about the transformative power of the arts to challenge assumptions, break from convention, and create dialogue within and between diverse communities. The new Executive Director will provide vision and leadership in partnership with the Artistic Director as the organization embarks on an ambitious capital campaign and enters a new facility in San Francisco’s vibrant and rapidly evolving Central Market neighborhood. This is an opportunity to lead an internationally recognized community-based organization with the potential to serve as a national model for sustainable funding and capital structures in the arts.

The new Executive Director will be a public face for CounterPulse, building partnerships and engaging other arts, social service, public and corporate communities to serve as a convener and facilitator of transformative dialogues through engagement with the arts. The Executive Director will drive operating revenue growth and renew commitment to the annual campaign while building momentum around the capital campaign with a larger and more diverse pool of individual and institutional donors.

Working in collaboration with the Artistic Director, five staff and five fellows, the Executive Director will advance organizational goals around the capital campaign, facility development, enabling artistic vision and programming, community engagement, and operational excellence. The Executive Director must represent CounterPulse’s culture and values in a wide diversity of communities and settings, and must be able to navigate dynamic relationships with social grace while articulating the organization’s vision and establishing partnerships key to its programmatic and operational success.

CounterPulse has a unique collaborative culture driven by consensus and shared leadership on both the board and staff. The new Executive Director will share the values of deep collaboration and teamwork, and embrace the benefits of diverse perspectives and leadership profiles. As confronting convention is part of CounterPulse’s DNA, the new Executive Director must be comfortable with challenging societal norms around identity and equity, while working within and leveraging established systems and structures for CounterPulse’s growth.

CounterPulse is open to considering qualified candidates outside of Northern California.

CounterPulse fosters a creative and professional environment that reflects the diversity of San Francisco. We actively recruit a wide pool of applicants representing dimensions of difference that include — but are not limited to — age, national origin, ethnicity, race, religion, ability, sexual orientation, gender or political affiliation.
